Browne, this copy (seven sheets) of Colonial records in the Spanish and two of the early languages of Florida-Aplachian and Timuquan - from her friend - Buckingham Smith". Smith was a linguist and also the translator of "The Relation of Alvar Nunez Cabeca de Vaca". He was also involved in the Florida everglades ecosystem in the 1800's. [200] . The Koran - Manuscript. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library. Good Condition. "This manuscript copy of the Koran was presented by the ex-Sultan Mormanda Mohammed III, ruler of Dikoa, Northern Cameroons, to Mr. Henry Gils, former war correspondent, now residing in Springfield (MA). Mr. Gils met this learned Moslem in 1917 after the fall of Morra Hills, in the Mandurra country in West Africa. He met him again in 1935 in French Somaliland. A Koran in the possession of a Christian while traveling through the desert country assures its bearer of aid and protection from the Moslem tribes. This copy was given Mr. Gils as a token of everlasting friendship". 601 handwritten leaves, Arabic script on versos and rectos, in red, black and yellow ink. 14 lines per page, with wide margins, on laid paper. Unbound as issued, with heavy cardboard covers. Includes a prayer on folded paper, meant to be worn on the body for protection. Unpaginated, uncollated, sold as is. Occasional damp mark on outer edge, not affecting the text. EST: $800.00 - $2,000.00
